The other day my parents came back from their weekly groccering. And I was absolutely horrified at the number of plastic bags that were given. There were SOO many.
Are Singaporeans, or in any case, people in general aware that one million plastic bags are being thrown away every minute around the world?
Have you ever wondered or thought about what happens to that free plastic bag after you throw it away? It gets buried away into a landfill and it doesnt biodegrade for the next hundreds of years or so..they pile up and pile up and begin choking plant and marine life. Thousands and thousands of innocent creatures are dying painful, premature deaths every day, putting an unbearable burden on our planet which WE live on.
So we have to ask ourselves, what can we do? What can we do to save our Earth?
Definitely, we cannot just stop using plastics altogether. We need plastics, but should monitor how much we use since its so costly to dispose of and should try to use minimum possible(gawd i sound like my mom).
Next time you buy a drink or sweet and a person puts in a plastic bag, kindly decline and return it. It's the least we can do rather than accepting it and chucking it in the next dustbin we see.
Cashiers who work at groccery stores should be educated not to use so many plastic bags on uneccessary items.
Groccery stores in Singapore should start using paper bags like in the States rather than plastic bags. In fact, what the government can do is start having the retailers charge customers for plastic bags like they do in Japan. (Sorry guys, but we have to take measures! Excess use of plastic has got to come to a halt!)
Singaporeans got to stop being so ignorant and start acknowledging the fact that our Earth is dying, and we are the reason.
We, as individuals got to play our own part and save our Earth.
People are blessed with the ability to change their environment and situations to suit their liking. I believe that we can all excerise that power to make the world a better place to live in.
Together, if everyone plays their own part, we can make a real improvment in our society.
Plastic bags are just a habit, if they aren't available, people will not even think of them.
